Checklist to prep for a great Race Day!

High Clouders - Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Hello friends!

Wow, we cannot believe that it is March already! On Thursday, March 4th, we gathered at GRC with some great folks that were new to triathlon or interested in trying their first race. At this event, we were able to answer questions about triathlon training, local races, equipment, techniques, nutrition, etc.

One of the topics that we discussed was the importance of preparing not only physically but mentally for race day. In other words, don’t wait until race day to think about how your Swim, Bike and Run might go in general.  A nice plan that you can memorize in your head and a quick checklist, will help your race not only to go smoothly but it will help balance / remove some mental and physical obstacles that will prevent you from performing to your full potential.

When creating our own checklist to prep for a great Race Day, we cannot forget:

First and foremost, the main goal should be to enjoy the “experience” regardless of the final result! “Remember that Spirit has fifty times the strength and staying power of brawn and muscle.” (From the Matrix)

Now below is the Checklist that we have used for different Triathlons, which contains a lot of great advice from some good friends.  You can customize anyway you want to make your race an amazing day:

Pre-Race

  1. Remain calm and flexible
  2. Carry race wheels onto the plane; put pedals in the carry on with shoes
  3. Eat healthy for the week. Drink lots of water
  4. Make sure bike has 2 tubes, canisters and the immediate pit stop canister for the tubular wheel

Night Before The Race

  1. Get to bed early, 8:30pm at the latest. Have all bags packed and ready to go
  2. Set out clothes for next morning
  3. Don’t forget the body glide and the sunscreen!!!
  4. Eat meal which includes fish, veggies, carbs and fruit (oranges & tangerines, etc)
  5. Prepare race drink mix (or tea etc), for the morning

Race Morning

  1. Breakfast at 4am – tea with sweet and low, 3 oranges and a vanilla Powerbar
  2. Drink a bottle of water
  3. Perhaps an orange before the swim

Swim

  1. Focus on you
  2. Don’t worry about anyone else
  3. Focus on long strokes
  4. Use drafting to your advantage, if you can
  5. Spot every 6 strokes
  6. It’s your swim. Enjoy the water!!

Transition Bags (T1)

  1. Bottle of Tea
  2. Small First Aid
  3. Open Oranges
  4. Bike helmet
  5. Socks
  6. Bike shoes
  7. Biking gloves
  8. Race belt with number
  9. Fuel Belt should be with your favorite food (Clifshots, etc)
  10. Sunglasses
  11. Suntan lotion

On bike:

  1. Bottle of Tea
  2. 2 Bottles of sports drink
  3. Food (bars, gel flask, gummy Clifshots) on little Bike bag.

Bike:

  1. Try to stay in the aero position as much as possible.
  2. Pull up on the hills. Think about circular motion, pulling up your knees, high cadence. Push and pull.
  3. Use the downhill to your advantage. Keep pedaling, switch into a higher gear and think cadence
  4. Drink approx. every 15 minutes
  5. Try to get through 1 water bottle every 45 minutes.
  6. Eat every 20 minutes. First, gels, then bars, then gels, then bars.
  7. Pick up drink at every 10-mile mark – water/sports drink/water/sports drink. Should take about 45 minutes, so should be finishing and picking up at the same time.
  8. Use Enduralytes salt tablets every 3 hours if needed.

Potential issues

  1. Flat – Take a deep breath and start changing it.  This is where the practice during training pays off!
  2. Crash – check all parts to make sure you are ok, if so, get up and keep going

T2

  1. Congratulate yourself on making it to T2 on time! You knew you could do it! Celebrate! YAY! Now only a run to go!!
  2. Drop bike shoes and get your running shoes!

Transition Bags (T2)

  1. Sun Visor!
  2. Sunblock
  3. Extra socks
  4. Running shoes
  5. Race belt (should be on me)
  6. Re-load Fuel belt (should be on me) with 3 gels in there, a few salt pills and a Powerbar!
  7. Open Oranges
  8. Salt packets

Run

  1. Start off jogging slow
  2. Drink and eat at every aid stations
  3. Get gels as well.
  4. Finish the run and celebrate!

And now, we leave you with our quote of the week “You have to accept whatever comes, and the only important thing is that you meet it with courage and with the best that you have to give.”
–Eleanor Roosevelt

Thanks for stopping by the Triathlon forum on March 4th, we can’t wait to join you in so many races this year and celebrate with you countless triathlon finishes!

Haitian children deal with earthquake aftermath

High
Cloud has been playing a part in the international effort to help Haiti after the earthquake struck more than one month ago.

High Cloud has been working near the earthquake's epicenter to provide money, medical supplies, and clothing to hurting children.

The foundation has been working with an orphanage in the village Cyvadier.  Eleven children live at this orphanage, and they did not see devastation like that in Port-au-Prince.  However, the orphanage lost electricity and potable water, and food and medication--even band aids!--have been very scarce.

In addition, High Cloud is helping to repair a ruined school with foundation partners on the island.  They report that conditions are slowly getting better, but the people's needs remain immense.

Tax-deductible gifts may be made HERE.  Specify that you are donating for Haiti.

Lorie King's nutrition tips

High Clouders - Saturday, March 13, 2010
Written with Lorie King

This month's nutrition advice includes a sweet splurge and a power food for athletes.  Enjoy!

Almond Butter Caramels

*Lorie's recipe is adapted from recipe by Julia at www.pecanbread.com

4 tbs Organic Butter, ¾ Cup Honey, 4 tsp Vanilla, ¼ tsp Sea Salt, 1 Cup Almond Butter (or nut butter of your choice)

Combine all of the ingredients in a saucepan and cook on medium heat, stirring constantly until the butter is melted and ingredients are well blended.  Pour into a lightly buttered 8" square glass baking dish. Put the dish in the freezer for 15-20 minutes or until the caramel is firm, but still soft enough to cut with a buttered knife or spatula. Cut caramel into bite-size pieces and serve or store them in the fridge.

Awesome Protein Powder, Super Greens and more for High Cloud Athletes

Exciting news!  High Cloud has partnered with OneGreenMom, (www.onegreenmom.com/highcloud) an online health food store based out of southern California.  This partnership is exciting for a couple of reasons.  First, you get connected with some really healthy, good-for-you products, and High Cloud kids get a portion of every purchase made with OneGreenMom.  It's a win-win deal!

I found OneGreenMom when I was looking for a protein powder that wasn't full of fillers, additives or preservatives--one that tasted good and was easy to prepare.  Vital Whey, the whey protein powder OneGreenMom sells, fits the bill.  Vital Whey is a non-denatured whey protein that is minimally processed.  Basically you are getting the immune building and regenerative components found in fresh, raw milk.  Vital Whey comes from cows that are not treated with hormones, but get to graze on chemical and pesticide-free grass.  For all of you runners, Vital Whey is a great way to recover and build muscle after a workout.

Another product that OneGreenMom carries that would be a great way to boost your workout and overall health is called Vitality SuperGreen.  It's a green powder full of various greens, vegetables, sea vegetables, and probiotics...all the right combinations for having a healthy ecosystem in your gut.  Mix Vital Whey and Vitality SuperGreen together and you've got yourself one powerhouse of a meal, snack or workout recovery.

To celebrate the new partnership and the season, OneGreenMom is offering High Clouders $5 off any order over $50 (not including tax, shipping and handling).  Go to www.onegreenmom.com/highcloudThe discount will be applied when you checkout.

I've had fun mixing up Vital Whey recipes in my kitchen.  As my gift to you, I'm sharing a tasty green smoothie recipe.

Vital Whey Green Smoothie

Vital Whey™ (chocolate or vanilla)

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, several High Clouders went to India to work with several groups of orphans.  Justin Warren wrote about the experience HERE.

MARINE CORPS MARATHON - October 2009
Every year, many High Clouders run the Marine Corps Marathon to support the foundation.  For High Clouder Mike Creadon, it was his 35th marathon.  He raised more than $1000 through his participation on www.active.com.

Mike said, "The mood at the MCM was very positive for all of the Marathon Charity Partners, as it is definitely worth while to run a marathon for a cause.  It was a beautiful day, and we got treated very well at 'Camp Rosslyn.'  I was able to get a post-race massage there without even waiting in a line!  I was also happy with my time of 3:37.  I have seen many of Matt Anderson's pictures, of how so many of these children live in poverty.  How can one not be moved to help?"

Look out for more information on High Cloud's participation in the 2010 MCM later this year.

HIGH CLOUD SPOTLIGHT: JAY JACOB WIND

High Cloud would like to congratulate and give a big "thank you!" to Jay Jacob Wind.  He just successfully coordinated the Cloud Snapple Half Marathon.

"I'm inspired every day by the accomplishments of High Cloud Foundation, and I'm delighted to be part of this effort," he said.

In addition to his race planning activities, Jay is an avid marathoner.  He completed more than five marathons last year, including the San Francisco and Boston Marathons.

He says running has been a lifelong passion.

"I started running for transportation as a teenager, and I really never stopped," he said.  "I ran my first few races and my first marathon in 1978, and then I set a goal to win a marathon, which I did in 1980.  Since then, I've remained competitive for 30 years, as I've passed through each age group.  Now at 60, I'm looking forward to winning more age groups."
