Running Motivation: Dream Makers

A couple taps into endurance - theirs and other runners' - to help underprivileged kids.. By Sarah Lorge Butler. Runner's World.

Adriana and Matt Anderson's average day is like a marathon. They rise most mornings at 6:30 to work as management consultants in Washington, D.C. They return to their Alexandria, Virginia, apartment at 7 p.m. and head out for a run. Afterward, their second shift starts. They're often at the dining-room table until 2 a.m., working on High Cloud Foundation, a nonprofit running organization they founded a year ago to send food and supplies to poor children in South America, Africa, the Middle East, and India.

Cloud Snapple in the Examiner!

By Lisa Kilday of the Examiner

DC Triathlon Club takes New Jersey (Lisa Kilday/2009)

The first annual Cloud Snapple Half Marathon is scheduled for Saturday January 30, 2010 in Caderock, MD. Don’t sweat the hilly location, the race organizers promise a flat and fast course. The half marathon is an out and back course on the C&O Canal Trail (crushed rock/gravel).  The race will benefit the High Cloud Foundation and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Two DC Tri Club members founded the High Cloud Foundation to fight poverty through nutrition and sports amongst other international humanitarian projects. The cost for the half marathon is only $25 if you register by January 8th. I hope there is a lot of free Snapple at the race.

Spirit of Service. Making Dreams Come True

Matt Anderson and his wife Adriana with some of the more than 300 children and orphans supported by High Cloud Foundation in Colombia.

Booz Allen founding partner Jim Allen once said, "There are many things in which to participate—community affairs, schools, churches, welfare organizations, professional and industrial groups. Choose wisely, but participate." Matt Anderson exemplifies this "spirit of service."

When Matt and his wife Adriana visited South America 8 years ago, they saw schools and an orphanage where children were living in poverty.

"I was struck by how cheerful these kids were, even though they had nothing," says Matt. "They were so happy for people to stop and talk with them—the children appreciated us for reaching out."

Matt and his wife began to go back regularly to the region—delivering shoes, clothes, and books to the children. In 2005, they founded the High Cloud Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization that provides humanitarian assistance to schools and orphanages in Brazil, Colombia, Peru, the Middle East, Kenya, Nigeria, Macedonia, Tunisia, and India. High Cloud’s guiding principle for these efforts is "dreams can come true."

Every few months, High Cloud volunteers provide educational sessions—over the course of about 2 weeks—to children in supported regions. These sessions build on four major themes:

  • Cloud of Knowledge—provides instruction in English, math, and science
  • Cloud of Nutrition—encourages children to use their limited resources to make healthier eating choices
  • Cloud of Environment—teaches conservation, basic sanitation, and recycling methods
  • Cloud of Sports—emphasizes the benefits of an active lifestyle by encouraging development of natural athletic abilities

"There’s no better feeling than directly helping these kids and encouraging others to get involved in alleviating world poverty," says Matt. "It proves we are able to be the change we want to see in the world."

Matt and his wife were appointed Ambassadors of Peace by the Universal Peace Federation for their work with High Cloud. Visit the High Cloud Web site to view pictures and video from recent humanitarian missions and to learn about how you can help.
